We're not Arizona — so does solar make sense this far north, under valley clouds and snow? Yes, more than people think. Here's what actually drives the numbers, minus the sales pitch.

Every homeowner considering solar in the valley asks the same fair question: does it work up here, or is it only for sun-baked states? It works. New York gets plenty of usable sun, the incentives are strong, and our electricity isn't cheap — which is exactly what makes solar pay.
But whether it's right for your house depends on specifics no billboard will tell you. Here's the honest version.
Cold and clouds matter less than you'd think
Panels actually produce more efficiently in the cold — heat is the enemy of solar output, not friend. Our clear winter days can be excellent producers. Cloudy days produce less, sure, but the system is sized across the whole year, and New York's sun hours are more than enough to make the math work.
Snow does temporarily cover panels, but they're mounted at an angle and dark, so they shed and melt clear faster than the roof around them. Over a full year the snow loss is minor.

What actually decides if it pays for your house
Three things: your roof, your shade, and your usage. A south-facing roof with a good pitch and no obstructions is ideal; east and west still work with a bit less output. The killer is shade — those big beautiful valley trees. Even partial shading on the array cuts production hard, so honest shade analysis matters more than any other single factor.
And it pays best if you actually use a lot of electricity — electric heat, an EV, AC through the summer. The more grid power you're offsetting, the faster it pays back.
Don't put panels on a roof that's about to die
This is the mistake we most want valley homeowners to avoid: mounting a 25-year solar array on a roof with five years left. When the roof needs replacing you'll pay to remove and reinstall the whole system. If your roof is aging, do the roof first, then the solar — or do them together.
That's also why solar and a good roofing plan belong in the same conversation. Get the envelope right, then generate on top of it.
